"Using entrepreneurship to empower marginalised groups and communities"

Charity mission statement:

Buzuayehu Tadele Foundation (BTF) strives to empower marginalised groups and communities in Ethiopia through improved access to training and education, igniting economic mobility and opportunity.

BTF aims to inspire, create, and collaborate around a common development agenda, specifically in relation to woman and girls, who are the nations primary disempowered demographic.

About:

With the economic growth of Ethiopia expanding at a rate of almost double the regional average, and under 25s comprising more than 60% of the population, the country faces novel challenges in keeping up with its ever-changing political and economic environment. In addition, with a literacy rate for those aged 15 and above resting at 49.1% (UNESCO, 2015), the challenge for Ethiopia lies in its ability to sustain its positive economic growth, whilst simultaneously advancing poverty reduction.

BTF aims to tackle both of these challenges, providing significant progress in education and up-skilling of Ethiopia's vast youth population, resulting in the creation of job opportunities and sustained livelihoods, and thus also maintaining and advancing the country's positive economic growth.

The Buzuayehu Tadele Foundation, established in 2019 as a civil society organisation, aims to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through empowering marginalised groups and communities, with a specific focus on ensuring gender equality in Ethiopia. With a specific focus on the empowerment of young women and girls, BTF aims to provide improved access to education, training and financial opportunities. The Foundation acknowledges the crucial benefits that creating opportunities for disadvantaged and marginalised groups, in particular women, can have in contributing to build a strong and resilient Ethiopia.

Core Areas of Focus

BTFs core focus areas revolve around four sectors and are set to be implemented in a phased manner.

  1. The 360 Degree Program Strategy firstly focuses on education. Educational support provides additional help to vulnerable and underprivileged woman and girls in rural communities, this is achieved through the use of academic intervention and mid-day meal programs.

  2. Up-skilling and training provides specialised training to people from underprivileged backgrounds. Training programmes include ICT literacy training, and life-skills training that focuses on English language communication skills, hygiene and etiquette. This phase aims to prepare those involved in the programme for better living opportunities, in particular widening the scope of employment for women who are often limited to domestic work.

  3. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the commitment of businesses to contribute to sustainable economic development by working with employees, their families, the local community and society to improve their lives in ways that are good for business and development (World Bank). BTF aims to instil the ‘corporate giving’ culture in all its group companies, assisting them in implementing CSR initiatives that support social causes and projects, ensuring they are socially responsible organisations.

  4. The fourth core focus is a long term vision that aims aid in the employment of disadvantaged and marginalised groups, seeking to train, develop and empower them and to conduct business responsibly and sustainably to further empower the communities in which business operates.
