Charity mission statement: The Laura Hyde Foundation’s objective is to ensure that all medical and emergency services personnel have access to the best mental health support network available, with their tagline being ‘caring for those who care about us’.

About: The Laura Hyde Foundation was set up in 2018, after the tragic passing of Laura Hyde, a young naval nurse. The charity is dedicated to providing support to anyone in the frontline services who may be experiencing mental health issues, and to help all those in the emergency services who dedicate their lives to helping others, yet may find themselves in a desperate situation, just like Laura. The Laura Hyde Foundation is the UK’s only charity that solely focuses on mental health awareness and support specifically for our medical and emergency services personnel.

Now more than ever, we are aware of the incredible strain our emergency services are under, both in times of crisis such as these, but also every day. Covid-19 has provided some well-needed perspective about who we really rely on to be the backbone of our society in unprecedented circumstances, and protecting the mental health of those who protect us has never been more important. For all of our firefighters, police officers, nurses, doctors, paramedics, coastguards, carers and everyone else in the emergency response sector, they are exposed to challenging and potentially traumatic situations every day in their work, and their own physical and mental health is often neglected in place of others. The Laura Hyde Foundation aims to ensure that these personnel have the mental health support networks to cope with such demanding jobs, as well as removing the stigma surrounding talking about mental health.

They are currently fortunate to have Adam Kay, author of This is Going to Hurt as their charity patron, and they have huge plans to expand their reach and increase their capacity to care for those who care for us. Their goals for 2020 include creating a clinically supervised 24-hour mental health support line for all medical and emergency services personnel, and improving the mental health support systems and management training for all workplaces in the emergency sector.

How can you get involved?

Helpfully, this poster from the Laura Hyde Foundation makes it really easy to see how you can get involved and what you can do to help them achieve their mission statement. If you have other ideas of ways you can help, you can always contact them on one of their social media sites!

Please get in touch if you would like us to feature a particular charity!
